Triumph TR7 D302 electronic distributor Lumenition conversion |
This is the standard North American specification Delco D302 series distributor. Being AC Delco, one would expect that service parts would be easy to obtain - wrong!
Thus, it was decided to fit a Lumenition optical ignition system. However, it quickly became apparent that the fitting kit offered by Lumenition would not be compatible, since it was designed for the European points type D302 distributor. Closer examination revealed that the European style base plate would be required.. |
The European points style base plate fits perfectly, but it is necessary to machine some material from the shaft assembly just below the old trigger wheel. To avoid the possibility of interference with the optical unit it is also advisable to machine the points from the trigger wheel. |
The Lumenition system produces a nice neat uncluttered installation .
Our only real complaint about Lumenition's method of retaining the ignition rotor is that the nuts which secure the rotor are very difficult to install with the distributor in situ because there is not enough room to get a socket on the nuts because of the rotor design. |
The arrow on the left shows where machining of the shaft collar is necessary. The vertical arrow indicates the screws that need to be longer. It was necessary to insert washers between the Lumenition trigger wheel and the shaft assembly in order to clear the plastic inserts that retain the centrifugal advance weight pads. |
