Olympia

 Un papillon dans la fleur de l’âge.

Si vous êtes à la recherche d’une ambiance d’avant-spectacle, d’effluves d’anticipation, Paris est votre ville. Pendant le mois de janvier, l’Olympia, dans le quartier de l’Opéra (en plein centre) accueille tous les passants avec un énorme néon " Véronique Sanson " comme une " Etoile Rouge ". Comparé à d’autres salles de la tournée, l’Olympia a une entrée très civilisée et très luxueuse menant à une arène de places assises. Que vous ayez choisi une place à l’étage inférieur, légèrement en pente, ou tout en haut au balcon, vous plongez sur une scène large et profonde, entourée de nombreuses publicités de sponsors TF1 et RFM (qui ont fait le bon choix).

20 h 30 et les grands rideaux de l’Olympia s’ouvrent pour la première partie : Arnaud Guilbert et ses 3 talentueux musiciens. Sa performance n’a pas duré longtemps mais ce chanteur et son groupe sont vraiment bons. Doué d’un registre vocal plus large que d’autres chanteurs plus connus, il est superbement accompagné et rajoute une dimension surprenante à ses mélodies. Ce groupe qui monte pourrait bien devenir un grand !!!

La foule est enthousiaste et vrombit. Les lumières baissent, l’Olympia acclame et applaudit, devançant l’arrivée de Véro tant attendue. Le rideau à moitié transparent se lève au milieu de la scène pour présenter l’orchestre de la République Tchèque, dirigé par Paul Buckmaster, entamant une superbe ouverture. Un jeu de lumières simple : un groupe de spots suspendus comme des étoiles dans l’espace. Les effets spéciaux étaient rajoutés par projection – et qui rendaient vraiment bien -, surtout grâce au double rideau de fond.

Véro entre, accompagnée d’une vague de cris de joie. Vêtue d’un beau costume violet, elle est assez année 70 !!! C’est " Je reviens de loin " qui débute son concert, mettant à contribution son nouveau groupe de 50 personnes ! On avait l’impression qu’elle avait été longtemps absente, mais tout à coup sa présence remplit la salle – un vrai spectacle s’ouvre aux yeux du public de l’Olympia.

Derrière Véro et son piano, aux claviers, Hervé Le Duc, sans sa casquette (!!), joue accompagné des visages familiers de Leland Sklar et Neal Wilkinson. la fondation basse/percussion du groupe de Véro. Véro chante avec force, et ralentit le rythme avec des chansons plus lentes tirées de son album " Papillon ". C’est sûr, Véro chantera 7 ou 8 titres de Michel Berger qui ne sont pas sur " Papillon ".

Le public applaudit fort, appréciant apparemment chaque note de musique, mais on en est à environ la 7^ème chanson de la série quand le public se met debout pour " L’amour est là ". Le thème familier et entraînant continue avec " Les princes des villes " juste après.

Au milieu du concert, il y eut aussi des moments d’émotion plus calmes qui offrirent les meilleures opportunités vocales de la soirée : " Seras-tu là " et " Lumière du jour ", pour lesquelles le refrain s’en sortit à la perfection.

Un rapide " interlude " joué par les cordes de l’orchestre permet à Véro de changer rapidement de costume. Elle revient sur scène en noir dans un look plus familier. La seconde partie comporte une merveilleuse " minute de silence " et la présentation traditionnelle mais toujours amusante de son groupe de " premier plan ", tout en reconnaissant l’immense privilège d’être accompagnée par Paul Buckmaster. & Co.

Véro sort… Le public est déjà comblé, mais on savait que ça n’était pas fini : on attendait quelques chansons vedettes de son album : " Le paradis blanc " et " Diego ". La chaleur monte à l’Olympia sous tous les rapports. Véro disparaît de la scène pendant le solo de guitare de " Diego " mais bien sûr sans passer inaperçue !

Entre-temps, le plafond de l’Olympia vibre de décibels de réclamation… " Une autre " ! Bien sûr, Véro était persuadée d’être rappelé (comme c’est si souvent le cas !) et d’offrir à tous un " Quelques mots d’amour " très bien accueilli… qui a servi à engendrer encore plus de cris d’" encore " ! Le public est infatigable ! Le chant final a été une surprise pour moi : " Ma révérence " et un adieu de circonstance après une soirée chargée d’émotion. Véro va bientôt présenter son spectacle bien rôdé au reste de la France – en souvenir de Michel Berger – une tournée qui l’honorera – un hommage inoubliable qui doit nous rester cher !

Olympia

 

If you are after pre-show aura, an emanation of anticipation, Paris is the city.  Olympia, in the Opéra region (bang in the centre), greets every January passer by with an enormous neon "Véronique Sanson" as of an "étoile rouge".  

In comparison to other stops on the tour, Olympia has a very civilized and deluxe entry to its seated arena.  With a choice of downstairs, slightly gradient, or an "up on the top" view from the balcony, you're looking onto a wide and deep stage, with surroundings sponsored heavily by TF1 and RFM... (they made a good choice!).

20h30, and the tall Olympia curtains draw open for the support: Arnaud Guilbert with his talented 3 musicians.  It was a short set, but this guy and his band have really got class.  

With a vocal range superior to many other better know performers, he has a great backing band and adds a catching slant to many of his melodies.  Sure this yet-to-be star band could well become a lot bigger!

The crowd are warm and buzzing.  The lights dim, and the Olympia cheers and applauds in anticipation of Véro's awaited entrance.  

The semi-transparent curtain mid-stage lifts to present the Czech Republic orchestra, led by Paul Buckmaster, into a splendourous opening.  

The lighting of simple concept: a family of hanging lights, as with stars in space.  The special effects were added by projection - and very effective, especially with the double backdrop.

Véro enters to a wave of audible appreciation.  Dressed in a smart purple suit, she's quite 70s in her look!  "Je reviens de loin" opens her performance making full use of her new 50-person group! 

It felt like she'd been away for long, but her presence now filled the salle - a real spectacle had caught Olympia's gaze.

Behind Véro and her piano, on keyboards, Hervé Le Duc, without his cap, but with a much more traditional subsititute was at work... accompanied by the familiar faces of Lee Sklar and Neal Wilkinson - the tight bass/percussion backbone of Véro's group.  

Véro was singing strongly, and keeps the tempo cool with some slower numbers from the "Papillon" album.

Sure, Véro has about 7 or 8 less familiar non-Papillon Michel Berger tracks to come... and most of them with a lot of "oomph"!!  

The audience is applauding loudly, and audibly appreciating every bar, but we are about seven songs into the set before the audience gets to its feet with "L'amour est là".  

The familiar and punchy theme continues with "Princes des Villes" following closely behind.

Mid-concert, there are some very touching quieter moments too which provided Véro's best vocal opportunties of the night: "Seras tu là" and "Lumière du jour", of which the chorus came off to perfection!

With a quick "interlude" given by the orchestral strings, Véro had time for a quick change of costume.  Back she came in a more familiar looking black.  

The second half included a beautiful "minute de silence" and the traditional, but always fun introduction to her "foreground" band, but including recognition of the enormous priviledge to have Paul Buckmaster and Co.

Véro exits... the audience already well-satisfied, but we knew it wasn't over: a couple of star songs from the album were still to come - and indeed they did - with the first "rappel" - "Le Paradis Blanc" and "Diego".  

By this time it was hot inside Olympia in many respects!  Véro slips off stage during the Diego guitar solo, but of course, never unnoticed!

By this time the roof of Olympia was vibrating with the decibels of demands... "une autre"!!  Sure, Véro was persuaded to (as she so often is!) come back and treat all to a much welcomed "Quelques mots d'amour".... which served to inject yet more cries... for more!  This audience was not tiring!  

The grand final was a surprise for me: "Ma Reverence" and a very appropriate farewell to an emotion loaded evening.  Véro soon takes her well polished show to the rest of France - in memory of Michel Berger - a tour which will honour him - an unforgettable tribute designed to be cherished!
